It was the long lazy days like these that Roz liked best. When it was hot and not humid, and the sky was the best shade of blue, and the crickets were buzzing in the cornfields. Star swished his tail, heading through the green-and-gold of the field, Roz leaning back to look up at the cloudless sky. Today is exploring day, she'd said to Star, and he'd nosed her as if in agreement. She hadn't bothered with a bridle or saddle; Star was placid enough to be led by halter. They had nothing to do on a Sunday -- no chores around the barn, no group activities with the other boarders. Just silence, and a long slow wander through the heat.
Maybe soon some of the other barn kids would come racing through Johnson Field with their own unicorns, or with one of the stable's big patchy mutts that was always up for a game of fetch, and Roz's perfect silence would be ruined.
But for now, there was just her, and Star, and the field of green and gold.
